About Us

“Home of the Four Inch Biscuit”

The longhorn skull facing the front door is the first hint that the Chuckwagon is a place like no other in the Valley. From the wagon wheel to the feed sacks to the iron skillets to the lasso and cowboy hat, the decor evokes nostalgia of the Old West. Especially fascinating are the photos of old chuck wagons in action, feeding hearty meals to hard-working cowboys and ranch hands.

The menu continues the theme, featuring 4-inch meal-on-a-biscuit sandwiches with such rustic names as The Round Up, Range Rider, and Stampede. The fare also includes burgers and ’dogs, BBQ, chicken and fish sandwiches, salads, sides, desserts, and a large breakfast selection. The fries consistently earn high praise, perhaps, co-owner Sarah Frum suggests, because they are cooked to order.

The Chuckwagon welcomes eat-in and drive-through diners. They have also provided bag lunches for local businesses, as many as 590 at a time.

From Building Things to Building Biscuits

It was 6 or 7 years ago that Mike and Sarah Frum first dreamed of owning their own restaurant, but found franchise fees prohibitive. They began saving up, believing they could go out on their own instead. When the Penn Laird location became available, the Frums decided that the timing was right. After extensive remodeling and redecorating, The Chuckwagon officially opened July 22, 2010. Originally open for breakfast and lunch, the hours have now expanded to 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., to satisfy customer demand.

Originally from West Virginia, Mike came to the area in 1990, whereas Sarah is a lifelong resident of Keezletown. They married in 1993 and are now raising 5 children. Sarah comes from a large family that always enjoyed home-cooked meals together. She learned to cook and bake at a young age, and polished her skills at a local retirement center. Her specialties include the baked goodies and homemade potato chowder. Mike’s background was in construction; he once built buildings, now he specializes in building biscuits. He also fashioned the decorative shadow boxes, and Sarah sewed the curtains. Together they created the menu and the atmosphere, scouring antiques stores and e-bay to find treasures to complement the family heirlooms which enhance the dining experience.

Mike and Sarah’s solid Christian faith is evident in many subtle ways. Sarah’s grandmother’s Bible rests open on the baked-goods display case, and the Ten Commandments plaque reflects their values as well. Christmas and Easter provide opportunities to put appropriate Bible verses on their outdoor message board.

As they look to the future, Mike and Sarah hope to continue to build their business one biscuit and one satisfied customer at a time.
